They tell us that it takes all kinds to make the world go around. You really notice the differences when you observe the variety of approaches to the matter of “instructions.” There are those who would never dream of starting a project or attempting an assignment without careful review and clear understanding of all the instructions. At the other end of the spectrum are those of us who for some reason have the confidence and perhaps foolishness to leap into the task with the optimistic hope that we will somehow understand how to make everything work as we go along. Needless to say, the latter method has a very poor track record of success. However, before we are too smug about our cautious and careful approach, it’s important to assess if our caution keeps us from actual accomplishment. If we hesitate and deliberate too long we may miss the opportunities that God has for us. It’s a great idea to attempt objectivity on your own approach. Do we need to slow down and humble ourselves enough to gather information before we start? Do we need to continue to carefully understand the instructions but then start? I love learning to use the amazing resource believers have available to them. “The mind of a man (or woman) plans his way but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) Friends, we have a very willing Helper. Little children sometimes stubbornly declare, “I’ll do it my own self!” Believers learn to say, “Lord, please direct me.” Let’s be smart and read the instructions and consult the Expert in all areas then get going!
