The power of words is unmistakable. The same message can be conveyed with words that cut and leave lasting scars or with other words that can serve to promote a helpful and profitable change of direction. Some people seem to take pride in their ability to “say it like it is” – meaning “give them my straight, frank opinion.” Believers take to heart the admonition to “speak the truth in love.” (Ephesians 4:15) We all need those valuable people in our lives who care enough about our welfare that they will risk telling us uncomfortable, needful things. However, if the words are harsh and cruel, they may cause defenses to go up so the one intended to hear them misses the point. We are to speak the truth to those around us in a way that can be received in order to benefit everyone concerned. Words of correction can be a great blessing if spoken from a wise and loving heart.
