D is for Debt

Friends- What is God saying to us concerning this highly unpopular topic? I am a rather thrifty person so I have a natural desire to be cautious about spending and of course I prefer to have funds on hand to cover my needs and “wants”. However, it is fairly easy for me to listen to the almost universal chatter around me so that I move the “wants” into the “needs” category and may feel it necessary to acquire debt to meet this imagined need. I’m finding more and more victory in choosing reality in this area but it has been a journey. Our God says some very blunt things in His word i.e. Rom. 13:8 “Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another”. This is definitely a counterculture message. We are consistently urged to join our neighbors in acquiring the latest “necessity” for only a few pennies a day. However, we are told that many families are shattered by the strain of debt. Personal credibility is damaged by failure to meet debts demands. Our life choices are limited because of debts priority. God never instructs without directing and enabling. It may not be easy to make the switch from the charge card to cash. We may be out of step with friends and family but we will be on track with God. It will surely not be easy but it will be amazingly satisfying. Seek advice and help from Godly professionals. Take the first step. The Spirit of God will go with us and guide us into all truth. It is good to remember that we do have a real debt of Love to the world around us for our God has lavished Love into our lives so that we may spend it on others. Blessing on your journey into debt freedom.
