Most of us dutifully schedule the annual checkup with the various medical professions. We mark the calendar to change the furnace filters, oil in the car and to look at expiration dates on food items. However we are less excited about the need for a frequent Examination of our lives as Believers. In Psalm 26:2 David, who has been reflecting on his life, wants God to do a more thorough examination when he says “Examine me and try me; test my mind and my heart. For Thy lovingkindness is before my eyes and I have walked in Thy truth”. It’s a great idea to involve a loving God in our personal examination when our heart’s desire is to be all that God dreams we can be. If we are content with mediocrity; if we use as our standard the comfortable pack we are in; or if we desire comfort more than conquest—then best to skip the Examination. For our God is faithful. He wants the very best for us and will never settle for “not too bad”. He knows the benefits and blessings that accompany a spiritual tune-up. He will point out things that need to go and things that need to be added. His examination will be thorough and He will even go home with us to help us make the needed changes. He gives us a prescription “Examine the scriptures daily” Acts 17:11 to jump start the needed alterations. We will never encounter a more loving partner for this vital examination. We don’t want to miss this life changing Check up.
