Friends, what does it really mean to be “Hospitable”? The dictionary says “friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests.” Wow, does that mean using my gift card to buy a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop? Or do I need to drag out the table cloth and find enough glasses – as well as go to the store for something I can stick in the oven? Is “Hospitality” something I do for my own reputation or to benefit someone else? We argue against things that make us uncomfortable or cause us more work. The spirit of Hospitality is one of a generous desire to include others and to make them feel cared for and encouraged. Conveying that spirit and mood can be done in a coffee shop or around the glitter of crystal at a formal dinner party. Hospitality can be found in a warm gesture to include someone into your conversation circle. It can be an invitation to walk or ride with you. It can even be offering someone half of your cookie! It is the act of including others in a warm accepting way into your activity. Our culture does not get very high marks in Hospitality. True Hospitality must have a personal touch beyond the electronic world. In a lovely passage in Romans 12:9-18 (I suggest you read it) there is included this phrase, verse 13 – “contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing Hospitality”… So, Hospitality needs to be practiced until it becomes a habit. Believers want their lives to be warm and inviting to those they touch. I would love for you to come to my house for Tea or Coffee! We can learn to be more Hospitable!
