Grumbling

“Do everything without grumbling or disputing.” (Philippians 2:14) Friends, this has to be a flaw in the translation. Surely it’s impossible to go through life – a life that is filled with foolish people and unfair assignments – and avoid grumbling! Actually, a little grumbling helps to let off steam. If I don’t grumble and complain, I may also continue to get these frustrating jobs and have to work with these annoying people. How will others know I’m annoyed if I don’t grumble and complain? Really, that is an easy question to answer. When we find ourselves in an unfair or frustrating situation there is a mature way to respond: 1) Find an appropriate time and quietly and without anger state what is bothering us, and 2) Make possible suggestions as to how to make the situation positive for all concerned. If our suggestion is well received there may be an adjustment that is pleasing to all. Sometimes however, the best ideas may fall on deaf ears. In that case we are back to our original assignment – “Do everything without grumbling or disputing!” It is amazing what God will do with this kind of mature obedience. When we encounter these mature Believers we are blessed. If we determine to be one of these Believers we will be a blessing!
